The number of people missing as a result of the California wildfire has decreased, according to authorities.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office now puts the figure at around 1,000 — which is about 300 less than what was posted by officials on Sunday morning.
Sheriff Kore Honea confirmed the new numbers later in the evening, and noted how many people are believed to be safe and in another area. Some may not even know that they’ve been reported missing, Honea added.
So far, more than 70 people have died in the Butte County Camp Fire.
The 150,000-acre blaze was 65 percent contained as of Sunday, according to local officials.
