If you were delaying buying AirPods this holiday season out of fear a new, updated version was near, you can rest a little easier. Updated AirPods are still in the works, but they are now expected to come early next year, and not this month as earlier rumors had suggested.
The latest update comes via Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. According to a note seen by AppleInsider, Kuo expects Apple will release new earbuds with wireless charging support and upgraded Bluetooth sometime in the first couple of months of 2019.
And in 2020, Kuo expects a redesign of AirPods will come. The analyst has one of the strongest track records of speculating on Apple’s moves, accurately detailing, for example, Apple’s 2018 iPhone lineup months before the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR were revealed.
That said, Kuo, like other Apple speculators, has had trouble when it comes to predicting the release of new AirPods. In the past, reports suggested that the new earbuds would be coming in 2018, something that obviously has yet to be the case.
First released in December 2016, Apple’s earbuds are overdue for an upgrade yet still remain strong sellers and popular gift options, particularly around the holidays.
While not always easy to find, those looking to buy the buds this holiday season may be best off shopping at the Apple Store, which seems to still let you buy them online or in a store. Best Buy, Target and Walmart all list the AirPods as not available for shipping online, though some do have it in their stores.
B&H will ship online orders, but currently has a delay that puts “expected availability” out four to six weeks. Amazon doesn’t currently appear to be selling AirPods directly from Apple, though other resellers are selling AirPods on the site, albeit at a fairly significant markup from the regular $159 price.
